Frequently asked questions

KeepTruckin is the leading fleet management platform for the trucking industry. KeepTruckin is trusted by over 40,000 fleets for compliance, fuel tax reporting, GPS tracking, video monitoring and much more. The US Department of Transportation has mandated the use of electronic logging devices (ELD) by all truck drivers to record their hours of service. With the #1 rated ELD, KeepTruckin has built the largest network of connected trucks in the world.’

KeepTruckin’s mission is to connect the world’s trucks. The company builds modern technology products that help improve the safety and efficiency of the trucking industry.

KeepTruckin is relevant for commercial fleets of all types, but our primary customers are long-haul fleets that need to comply with the ELD Mandate. This includes more than 300,000 owner-operators and small trucking companies that have until now relied primarily on paper-based workflows.

The KeepTruckin ELD hardware device is available for purchase online at keeptruckin.com or in store at Pilot Flying J truck stops across the country. The KeepTruckin Electronic Logbook App is available for free in the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

KeepTruckin differentiates from competitors in two fundamental ways — bottoms up distribution combined with a highly modular product that can be used by fleets of all sizes.

Our first product was the free KeepTruckin Electronic Logbook App that allows drivers to record their logs on their Android or iOS devices. By providing an easy to use alternative to paper logs and making it available for free, we have earned the trust of hundreds of thousands of drivers. But it doesn’t stop there. Drivers bring us into their companies and effectively sell on our behalf. Bottoms up distribution has given us a fundamental sales advantage vs. competitors that sell top down.

Complementing the free Electronic Logbook App is our paid ELD hardware and service. By providing a modular platform, we allow fleets to upgrade and enable additional functionality with the flip of a switch. The same hardware and software platform can support an owner-operator who simply wishes to comply with the ELD mandate and a 5,000+ vehicle fleet that wants advanced telematics and fleet management functionality.

The KeepTruckin Electronic Logbook App and Dashboard are free for drivers and fleet managers. We provide the KeepTruckin ELD as a premium service, starting at $20 per vehicle per month.

The KeepTruckin ELD plugs into a vehicle’s diagnostic port. The KeepTruckin Electronic Logbook App for Android and iPhone/iPad connects to the ELD via Bluetooth and automatically records driving time. Drivers can use the KeepTruckin App to view and edit their logs, create vehicle inspections, send messages and much more. The ELD installs in all vehicles with an engine control module (ECM) and is registered by the FMCSA. A few useful demo videos include: ELD Training for DriversKeepTruckin DemoPlatform OverviewKeepTruckin App for Drivers

An ELD synchronizes with a vehicle engine to automatically record driving time, for easier, more accurate hours of service (HOS) recording. Using an ELD allows companies to reduce operational cost and better monitor the efficiency of their fleet. An ELD, at certain intervals, records the following data:

  • Date
  • Time
  • Location Information
  • Engine Hours
  • Vehicle Miles
  • Identification information for the driver, authenticated user, vehicle, and motor carrier

The ELD mandate is the final ELD rule approved by the FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) published on December 16, 2015. The ELD mandate requires most commercial vehicles operating in the country to install electronic logging devices (ELDs). The mandate states that all drivers required to keep an hours of service log must use a compliant ELD to record their hours of service. Fleet owners and truck drivers who use the KeepTruckin ELD benefit from reduced paperwork, streamlined operations, increased efficiency and fewer HOS violations.

The ELD mandate took effect on December 18, 2017. Most commercial motor vehicles (CMVs), which were not exempt from the ELD mandate, are required to have installed compliant ELDs by December 18, 2017, to be considered compliant. The FMCSA begins the final phase of enforcement of the ELD mandate on April 1, 2018.

For more detail please see FAQ here.

ELDs help improve road safety and save lives by ensuring that drivers comply with hours of service regulations which are designed to reduce incidents of driver fatigue on the road, among other major causes of commercial vehicle accidents. For this reason, the FMCSA has recognized that ELDs are essential to maintaining road safety. Apart from improving safety, ELDs will allow vehicles to be connected, bringing the industry online and ushering it into the modern age of transportation.
